For a blonde wood look you ll see bamboo maple white oak red oak and ash. That usually makes them unhappy but the reason is that the grains in both maple and hickory flooring can be very hard in spots and very soft in others. The floor was to be sanded stained a dark brown color and finished with four coats of a leading waterborne finish in a satin sheen. Over the past couple of years we have experimented re done mistakes and have been able to produce some very nice stained maple floors that have cherry walnut or dark mahogany colors.

While you can use a stain to get the darker colors mentioned above with a light color it s best to purchase a wood floor that is already blonde. If you decide to screen your maple floor or use grits finer than 100 you will need to pop the grain. Once the sanding is done then you need to thoroughly clean the wood. Because of maple s light color any dust or foreign debris left on the floor will show up instantly when you apply stain or dye.

Not being satisfied with this answer myself i began experimenting with alternate methods of creating stained maple floors. They have been reproduced using digital production techniques. The customer and his designer made it clear that the stain color and the satin sheen level was expected to be even and uniform over the entire floor area.
